Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Against stupidity we have no defense
Synopsis
As the world teeters on the brink of destruction, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and his fate to save millions of Jews from genocide. Niemoeller actor August Diehl previously played an SS Gestapo officer in Nemilosrdni gadovi (2009) and a German citizen who resisted enlisting in the German army in Skriven život (2019)..
Reasoning is of no use
Protests or force cannot touch it. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be believed – indeed, a fool can resist them by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can only be dismissed as trivial exceptions.
It felt complete, leaving the viewer feeling heavy but satisfied
This depicted the moral complexity and high cost of doing the right thing in a great way. Despite criticism that the writers took too much liberties with the timeline, the changes worked well in keeping the pace and main thrust of the film.
8/10 – this is much better than the press
The acting was strong and the writing was good, despite a couple (just a couple) cliché lines that still fit the moment. The actor playing Bonhoeffer avoided the clichés of being the perfect hero and showed the frailty of a man suffering from a hopeless cause.
